Somali Commissioner Seriously Injured in Blast

Mogadishu, (insidesomalia.org)- The commissioner of Baidoa district has been seriously injured by roadside bomb went off. Bodyguards also died on Saturday according to eyewitnesses.

 Eyewitnesses said that plumes of smoke rose near the central bank of the town when the vehicle that was carrying the commissioner Hassan Bikalo struck by the bomb blast.

Three of his bodyguards also died in the blast.

 Islamist rebels have been blamed for the attack. Fighting between troops and rebels has worsened in recent months.

There has been no comment from the government officials on this incident.

 Mr Bikole was rushed to main hospital in the where is undergoing surgery for severe head wounds, according to reports from the hospital in the town where he was taken.

"The commissioner was on his way to police station when his white Toyota Land Cruiser vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb," eyewitness Mohamed Yasin said.

The windows of the vehicle were shattered and photos show the passenger side riddled with holes.

 Roadside bomb are placed underground the ground. They can be detonated by remote control and the explosives can be directed. They are frequently used by the Islamists in Somali fighting against the Ethiopian backed government and the foreign forces in Somalia.

 Police sealed off the scene of the attack.

 The Islamists started attacks on the military forces last year after their administration fortces have been driven out by Ethiopian backed Somali troops.

Agencies say that At least 8,000 people have died since the conflict began in late 2006.
